have been lined inside with a view to render them Major General Burrell has expressed a wish that a Hospital be built at them for forty patients and I have consequently bearing
mind the in very fragile character of these barracks, had a building commenced of a sort that I think is calculated to prove the best for all barracks. When this building is finished, which it is to be in fifty days from it's commencement, it may serve for the purposes of a Hospital, or those of a small barrack, should so large a Hospital not then be required, which it is to be presumed will not always be wanted for so few men as the Volunteers now amount to in number.
The permanent store room has been some time commenced, and the first stage is finished : but as the nature of the ground in the vicinity of the west barracks did not admit of a building larger than 43/14th of the size of that of Mt. Mathers, I have now had commenced another of a suitable size close to it to make up the deficiency of the first. The character of the barrack or Hospital I have already alluded to - which will serve for the purpose of a store for coolies if requisite, or for any other purpose.
The road from the west Barracks to the Bazaar is in all respects as it was left by the Engineers who preceded us up the coast with General de Rougemont, though with the exception of many small bridges which have been built where they were required to make it passable. As private individuals are however about to build houses and store rooms to the west of the Bazaar, it will soon be requisite to make this portion of the road of a suitable breadth.
